the corporal works of mercy
This song was originally written in 2006 and recorded in 2007... and it needed some tweaks to the lyrics and so it languished... but then the Pope proclaimed 2016 a Year of Mercy, and that was motivation to fix (if not per-fect) the lyrics and re-record vocals.
BTW, an interesting thing when our kids were recording -- naturally they were often bouncing off the sound-absorbing walls of the studio. But whenever they needed to calm down, we'd all sing the refrain to this song, and instantly they would become quiet and contemplative. Fascinating... That year has come and gone, but "the poor you will always have with you" (Mt 26:11; Mk 4:7), so the song shall remain available. If this song meets any of your needs, sing it. Play it. Share it. THE WORDS
Matthew chapter twenty five, the final judgment’s come
And everyone is worried ‘bout the sinful things they’ve done
But there’s another standard that descends from above
God doesn’t ask “what were your sins,” He asks “How well,
How well did you love?”
Chorus:
Did you feed the hungry
And shelter the homeless?
Give drink to the thirsty
And bury the dead?
Did you give clothes to the naked
And visit the sick?
Did you comfort the imprisoned?
Did you do it for Him?
‘Cause that’s what Jesus said.
The more you sin, the less the love of God can live within
And so you know, it isn’t right, it’s not OK to sin
But being clean is not enough to grow the kingdom’s seeds
God works through us, so say a prayer and join in
Join your words to deeds
(Chorus)
So can you open up your heart and put your judgments down?
Cause no one’s earned the right to skip the cross and take the crown
And there’s a higher standard than the justice that we know
If you give to others foolishly, just watch it
Just watch the kingdom grow
(Chorus 2)
We’re gonna feed the hungry
And shelter the homeless
Give drink to the thirsty
And bury the dead
Let’s give clothes to the naked
And visit the sick
We’re gonna comfort the imprisoned
Gonna do it for Him,
‘Cause that’s what Jesus said.
